Forty-four years at the end of this school year.

I graduated from DeKalb County High School and went to college in Nashville at Belmont University.  After graduation, I taught school in Morgan County, AL for twenty-five years and moved back to my hometown of Smithville, TN in 1996.

After teaching seventh grade English at Dekalb Middle for three years, I was given an opportunity to work in the Dekalb Adult High School.  The Adult High School was a high school GED program when I first started, but over the last eight years we transitioned to a different program--serving anyone who wishes to complete a regular high school diploma.  Any adults living in the county eighteen years older, or seventeen (with special persmission) may attend AHS and take courses necessary to complete their high school secondary diplomas.  The diploma earned will be a regular diploma.  We are no longer a GED or alternative diploma school.

It's my pleasure to work with many students from seventeen with the oldest graduate to date being in her thirties.  It's never too late to come back to school and get your diploma.  Any interested students may call the guidance department at the high school.  The students have their transcripts sent to the records department and are evaluated based on the standards for graduation when the student started high school.  The guidance counselor will determine how many subjects and what these need to consist of after the records are received.  The student is then reccomended to the DeKalb Adult High School and meet for a conference to enroll.
